Table of Contents:

With roughly 2.91 billion monthly active users as of 2021, Facebook is the most used online social network worldwide. Which also makes it one of the biggest platforms for advertising your products.

What started off as a simple social networking website, has now become an essential tool for growing your business. Building up brand awareness, selling products, generating leads- you can do it all with Facebook, as it lets you run Ad campaigns using Facebook's Ad Manager. You get to segment Facebook users by interest, demographics, behaviors, and more, which makes reaching your target audience a lot easier.

In this article, we will be guiding you through all the steps needed to  set up your Facebook ad account and start advertising.

Before setting up an ad account, one has to set up something called a Facebook Business Manager account. Facebook Business Manager is a website owned by Facebook which works as a tool that you can use to manage Facebook and Instagram advertising activities and business assets. Also, you get to keep your personal activities and business activities separate.

Creating a Facebook Business Manager Account

  1. First we need to head over to Facebook Business Manager. Type in business.facebook.com in the URL box.
  2. Once there, click the button on the top right of the page that says CREATE ACCOUNT.
  3. You will need to Log In to Facebook to continue. Make sure that you log in with your personal Facebook account. No need to worry about privacy, this is just a verification step.
  4. After logging in with your personal Facebook account, click on CREATE ACCOUNT again.
  5. You’ll be given a form where you will need to fill out your:
  • Business and Account name (must be the same name displayed on Facebook)
  • Your name
  • Your business email (must put your work email address here)
  1. After you’ve finished submitting the form, you’ll get a message telling you your account is created and ask you to confirm your email address. You just need to log into your work email and confirm access.
  2. Logging into your work email, you will see an email in your inbox from Facebook, titled "Confirm your business email". Open it and click on Confirm Now.
  3. You will then be redirected to the Facebook Business Manager settings page. You now have a Facebook Business Account for your businesses!

Now, you have only just opened your Facebook Business Manager account. A few more things to do now before you're all set up with creating your ad account and can start advertising.

Granting Access to Partners and Team Members

From the settings of your business manager account, you can grant access to team members and partners who will need account access.

Go to the Users tab, click on People, invite them by searching them by name, ID, or email address. From here, you can grant appropriate access according to their level in your organization and send invites. To learn about Facebook Business Manager roles in detail, click here.

Adding a second admin(a trusted employee for example) soon after creating your business manager account is something you should do as a safety measure. That way  if you were to accidentally lock yourself out or remove yourself from the account, you will have someone else to grant you access.

It might not seem necessary, but this happens more often than you may think! Granting this person admin-level access when sending an invite should do the trick.

Adding Your Business Page to Your Business Manager Account

Next step is adding your business' Facebook page to the business manager account.

You need to be an admin of your Business's Facebook page if you want to link it to the business manager account. If you don't have admin access you can request one of the admins to grant you this access.

Once that's done, head over to the business manager account, click on Pages and simply paste the URL of your business’s Facebook page into the “Add a Facebook Page” pop-up. Your page is now added to the business manager account.

Setting Up Payment Method

You will need to add payment methods before you can start setting up an ad account.

Scroll down on the left-hand navigation bar to the Payment Methods tab.  Select Add Payment Method, then fill out the required Credit/Debit card information fields(cardholder Name, card number, expiration date, security code etc.).

Now you are ready to create an ad account for your business!

Creating an Ad Account

  1. Go to the Ad Accounts tab and click on the blue Add button
  2. Click on Create a New Ad Account. From the drop down menu select Create a new ad account.
  3. Name your ad account, select your business page, enter your time zone, currency, and payment method.
  4. You should have at least one secondary payment method in place. If you only have a primary payment method set up and it fails for some reason(credit card blocked or limits exceeded)- all the running campaigns will halt until you settle the balance, which is bad for business.
  5. After filling out all this information, click on Create Ad Account.
  6. Afterwards, you can select which users you want to add to this ad account and assign their access levels. There are a bunch of roles you can choose from. To find out in details about ad account roles click here.

Successfully completing the above steps, you will have your Ad account ready and all set to run ads for your business on Facebook.

Now that you have your Ad account all set, you can launch and manage your ads using Facebook Ads Manager. You can create Facebook ad campaigns, manage bids, select target audiences, optimize campaigns, do performance monitoring, perform A/B tests- all using the Ads manager tool.

Creating Ad Campaigns

Head over to the Facebook Business Manager and select the square icon on the top left. Here you will see the Ads Manager. You can create your ad campaigns from here. The basic steps needed to do this are-

  1. Go to the Campaigns tab in Ads Manager.
  2. Press Create.
  3. Choose your brand objective. You will be able to choose from- Brand Awareness, Reach, Traffic, Engagement, App Installs, Video Views, Lead Generation, Messages, Conversions, Catalog Sales, and Store Traffic.
  4. Name your campaign.
  5. Next you'll need to set up budget and bidding. Two different budgeting methods will be available to you- Daily budget and Lifetime budget.
  6. You can choose between automatic bidding and manual bidding. If you're only starting your campaign, automatic bidding is the recommended choice for you.
  7. After setting up budget and bidding method, you'll need to choose your Facebook ads start date. Choosing this wisely will lead to greater reach and more conversions.
  8. Next step is placing your ads. Available placements will be dictated by your campaign objective. You can also place ads manually in Ads manager, but choosing automatic placement is suggested for beginners.
  9. Next up is the final step of your campaign creation- the ads. You can create new ads or use existing posts from your Facebook page. You can choose the ad format(single image, video, carousel) based on what placements you have chosen prior. Then, simply upload your Ad creatives.
